Ancient Greek, Bout of Books, and Novels.

You can probably tell from the title, there hasn't been a great deal of reading going on! But, there has been a lot of thinking, and it is only twenty to eight in the evening here, so after this post I'm about to sit back with a hot drink and read as much of Discipline and Punish as I can. Incidently, I did end up reading it before I went to sleep, and I did have a nightmare. So be warned, if you decide to read it: it is not a bed time book!

So what did I do today...? Well, Greek is what I did. I'm working through Peter Jones's Learning Ancient Greek and it's going very very slowly. The picture to the left is what I've done today: I wrote that from memory, the letters as folllows:
Alpha (A) -  Α α
Beta (B) - Β β
Gamma (G) - Γ γ
Delta (D) - Δ δ
Epsilon (E) - Ε ε
Iota (I) - Ι ι
Kappa (K) - Κ κ
Omicron (O) - Ο ο
Pi (P) - Π π
Sigma (S) - Σ ς
Tau (T) Τ τ
Upsilon (U) - Υ υ
The word at the bottom is Oιδιπoυς - Oidipous, or Odepius. As I say, I wrote it from memory, and the Greek T looks more like a G, but that is because I did it the way I write my English 'T's. I did write a few other words, but not from memory so I'll spare you those!

Finally, novels... I've been meaning to re-write my NaNoWriMo novel from November, and these good intentions have got me precisely nowhere. However, I have come across this - Camp NaNoWriMo. I'm thinking about it. It's not until June, so... I'm thinking about it. It might not be the right thing for me, in that I might be left more crappy words in the rush to finish, however it will give me a little motivation. This novel does need thinking about. It would be a waste to let it go. But it does need thought, and proper "sitting down with paper and a pen" thought.

So that's what is happening today. I'm going to reluctantly return to Discipline and Punish. I would love to finish it tonight, but Foucault is not one to be rushed.

Hope everyone else is doing a lot better with their read-a-thon!

Edited to add: Just finished Discipline and Punish, which is my second book this week so far. Next up: torn between Nicholas Nickleby and Confessions of an Opium Eater.

  1. I memorised Greek alphabet when I was 12, and it turned out to be excessively useful when I study math and physics. But I've never had teh chance to study the language, though it'd be vary nice if I could speak (or at least understand) both Greek and Latin.

  3. This is the only language I've studied by myself, I only speak GCSE French aside from my native tongue. I'm really enjoying it, and I think it will be useful despite what some people have told me!

  4. I've always wanted to learn some Greek, and for some reason I cannot hold the alphabet in my head very well. I learned the Russian alphabet with no problem, so I don't know what's wrong with me! Someday I'd love to study Greek properly though.

I have to say, I hated that Opium Eater book! Boring!
